Who says you need a huge Christmas tree or an enormous living room to make your home feel festive?
Some of our favourite Christmas decorations are the smallest ones. A glowing paper star in a window, a few colourful decorations hanging from a shelf or a little cluster of stars above a cosy corner can transform a space.
Whether you're in a flat, decorating a small living room or simply hoping to make your home feel festive without filling every surface, these are a few ideas we love. No extra floor space required.

1. Make the most of your windows
Windows are wonderful places to decorate when space is limited. They don't take up room on shelves or furniture and can be enjoyed from both indoors and outside. Try one illuminated paper star in the centre of a window, or hang a couple at different heights if there's space.
Our handmade paper star lanterns look beautiful with warm-white LED lighting. Sometimes switching off the main room lights and letting one glowing star do the work is all you need.
2. Discover the magic of mini paper stars
We've always loved a statement star, but sometimes a smaller decoration is just right. Our new 25cm mini paper stars are lovely for compact windows, cosy corners and grouped displays.
Red, Green and Gold minis bring a traditional festive palette into even the smallest room. Hang them together or mix them with a full-sized star for a playful change in scale. And when Christmas is over, they fold flat for storage.
3. Decorate above your furniture, not around it
Short on shelf space? Look upwards. A paper star above a side table, a row of minis near a window or a hanging arrangement above a favourite corner creates atmosphere without adding clutter. Varying the heights makes the display feel relaxed. Just ensure every hanging fixture is secure and keep paper decorations away from heat and damp.

4. Choose colours that make you happy
Red, green and gold
Traditional festive colours are cheerful and familiar. Try a cluster of coloured minis with a larger star nearby.
White, gold and natural tones
For a calmer look, pair classic white or gold paper stars with greenery and warm light. We love how textured and patterned stars add detail without overwhelming the room.
Bright and playful
Christmas doesn't need to match perfectly. Mix patterns and bold colours if that's what makes you smile. Some of the loveliest displays reflect the personality of the people who live there.
5. Create a festive display without a tree
Not everyone has space for a full-sized Christmas tree, and that's absolutely fine. A grouping of stars in a window, a small display on a shelf or a single illuminated lantern can feel just as festive. You can rearrange the stars each year for a different look.

6. Add a warm glow with suitable LED lighting
A few well-placed lights can make a small room feel cosy. Our USB LED lighting kit uses a warm-white 1.5W LED and a 4-metre cable for flexibility in indoor displays. Suitable battery-operated micro lights can also work with compatible stars. Always follow lighting safety guidance, and remember that the colours and patterns of our stars look lovely unlit too.
7. Choose decorations you'll want to keep
We love that our paper stars aren't just for one Christmas. They're made to fold flat and can be carefully stored somewhere dry until next year. Each one is handmade by skilled artisans in India, bringing beautiful craftsmanship into your home.
Small-space Christmas decorating FAQs
How can I decorate a small flat for Christmas?
Try window decorations, hanging stars and carefully positioned lighting. These create a festive feeling without taking up floor space.
What decorations work for small windows?
Mini paper stars, a single illuminated lantern or a small grouping at different heights can all work beautifully. Measure the space before buying.
Can you decorate without a Christmas tree?
Absolutely. Stars, wreaths, window displays and cosy lighting can create a Christmas atmosphere without a tree.
Do mini stars need lighting?
Not at all. Mini paper stars are beautiful unlit. For an illuminated arrangement, only use lighting confirmed as compatible with the chosen design.
A little Christmas magic goes a long way
Christmas decorating isn't about how much space you have. It's about creating a home that feels welcoming and full of things you love.
We've been sharing handmade paper stars since 1996, and after 30 years we still believe a little light can make a space feel rather special.
