Also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, this year it runs from Tuesday, February 1 to February 15. 2022 is the year of the tiger. Tied to the Chinese lunar calendar; it is traditionally a time to pay respects to heavenly Deities including ancestors; whilst bringing family and friends together. It has been a long tradition for family and friends to return home from work or studies to celebrate together whilst enjoying home-cooked specialities.

There are 12 animals associated with the Chinese zodiac and New Year, deriving from a folk tale known as the Great Race. Assigned to the 12 animals are positive and negative traits.

The Tigers’ positive qualities include being adventurous, kind and enthusiastic. Their negative attributes can include being short-tempered and aggressive.

This Year - Tiger – 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034

Next Year - Rabbit – 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023, 2035

The celebration's final day is marked by the Lantern Festival, where many people release lanterns into the sky.
