Shop Independent this Christmas and ‘Be a Star’

This Christmas more than ever it’s important to support small independent businesses. At Paper Starlights, we’ve teamed up with Independent businesses in our town of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, to do just that.

Introducing the ‘Be a Star and Support Independents’ campaign

We’ve donated 100 of our handmade star lanterns to around 80 businesses across the town centre of Chesterfield, for passers-by to see. This is to help encourage people to shop locally this festive season and put money back into the local economy. Our stars have been kindly distributed with the help of fellow local Independent, Shop Indie.

Andy Jupp, the owner of Derbyshire based Paper Starlights said " we wanted to say thank you to all the local Derbyshire businesses who have given us so much support over these last 2 years. Now, more than ever, we need to keep shopping local "

The stars will be on display across Chesterfield until Christmas 2022. We encourage everyone to go out and see how many stars you can spot!

Make sure to tag in the Independent shop you spot, @independentchesterfield and @paperstarlights.

How can I support local shops this Christmas?

There are lots of ways to support local shops this Christmas. Shop locally, buy locally. It’s a mantra we have been hearing for years now but it’s one that we should all be taking seriously. Not only does it help our economy, but it also supports small businesses who are often more willing to give back to their community by sponsoring local events and supporting charities.

The more money that's spent in local shops at this time of year, the better it will be for all local businesses – especially those who survive on Christmas trade.

So how do you shop independently this Christmas? Here are some ideas:

  1. Shop at your local market  – there are plenty of these around the country so why not check out yours? You'll find everything from fresh fruit and veg to organic meat, fish and dairy products as well as handmade gifts and jewellery.

  2. Visit independent shops in your town – these days you can find anything online, but if you really want to support local retailers then look for those with an independent stamp on them.

  3. Share your favourite business with your friends and family. If you've found a great bar or restaurant, or discovered an amazing shop that sells beautiful things, then why not let others know about it too? Sharing your favourite businesses with others will help them get more customers too.
