Our Sustainability Goals

Paper Starlights’ culture is rooted in creativity, collaboration, fairness, inclusivity, and environmental consciousness. Where we can, we try and work within the framework of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. In other words - we want to use our business for good things – to the best of our abilities. It’s a work in progress, and we would like to be doing it better. Explore how we champion sustainability & ethical trading.

Sustainable Materials & Packaging

We want to create love and light without a dependence on unsustainable materials or environmentally damaging manufacturing processes - so we always use responsibly sourced paper and non-polluting pigments. Our paper stars are artisan-made and screen-printed by hand using traditional techniques. This is not only easier on the environment, but also ensures each star is one of a kind. We’re also intosustainable packagingand are currently looking into our transport footprint.Goods are despatched by sea in sturdy boxes, after being transported to the docks using the traditional mode of transport – the handcart. We re-use the boxes for storage and wholesale fulfilment – they last for up to 10 years. A note to stockists – you may be receiving your order in a vintage box!

Small Batch Production

At Paper Starlights, sustainability is not just a trend; it's our guiding principle. Quality over quantity – that's our mantra. Each lantern is skilfully handmade in small batches, allowing us to maintain the highest standards of craftsmanship and reduce waste. We steer clear of mass production, instead opting for limited runs and quality seasonal collections. Any paper offcuts are re-purposed into product packaging – and even table confetti for weddings. Each part of the making process is performed by hand. And will always begin in the time-honoured way - a hand-drawn sketch.

A Commitment to Fairness

Paper Starlights are members of BAFTS and our business ethics are defined by our commitment to the Ten Principles of Fair Trade as set out by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO).

At the heart of our ethical principles lies a passion for crafting eco-friendly products that share light and a sense of purpose. We embrace share trade, where fairness, collaboration, and support are the cornerstones of our business. We believe that quality is a natural byproduct of an equitable, creative, and cooperative approach to trade. Our aim is simple: to ensure fairness throughout the entire production process, from creation to point of sale. We see our work and trade as catalysts for community building and fostering togetherness among people. It's not just about crafting exquisite starlights; it's about weaving connections and spreading happiness.

Handmade Gifts Become Treasured Keepsakes

Our commitment to the environment shines as bright as the stars we create, and we’re dedicated to minimising waste and maximising sustainability in the best way we can. Our paper star lanterns aren't just a one-time wonder - once the party’s over, each lantern can be conveniently folded flat and stored, waiting for the next celebration. It's an invitation to start a family tradition - bringing out a shining star to create magical moments for your loved ones, not just once but for many celebrations to come.

Giving Back

At Paper Starlights, our desire to spread light and happiness extends beyond craftingenvironmentally friendlydecorations. We see trade as a means of building and affirming social connection – and we value the communities and physical spaces where we live and work. Our ‘Be a Star’ campaign supported independent businesses in the Peak District by encouraging people to Shop Local. And we work with incentive schemes introduced by event organisers to raise funds for local charities, in particular, Bath Christmas Market and Julian House in Bath. We also donate stars to local lantern parades and community events where we trade.
